What’s in your Zen cup?

“Find strength in your weakness.”

KT Cat Paws

I know my weakness.

I can be judgmental, stubborn and lazy. I have also learned that my “weaknesses” gave me my sense of humor and my determination. I am a sassy cat because of it.

Despite my weakness, I will always have a lesson to learn. That is stubbornness for you!

So, I share with you one of my favorite stories.

Zen Tea

A Zen Master named Nan-in received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served tea.

He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”

“Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations.

How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

Ask yourself, what are you pouring out of your tea pot into your cup? What is your teacup overfilled with?  Judgement, knowledge, thoughts, burden, disappointment?

Are you sharing this tea with others, expecting them to drink it up?

After you have poured your tea, you should look on the the floor for the puddle of your own insecurities. Find your strength in the truth that is spilled on the floor.

It is time to clean the pot out and start fresh. Before you anything to the pot, look into the emptiness of the cup.

Once you have found Zen in an empty cup, fill it slowly with all the good in your life.

…lastly add some catnip.
